What is the Root Canal?
The root canal eliminates the bacteria from the infected tooth, prevents reinfection, and saves the natural tooth. When you undergo a root canal treatment, the inflamed pulp is removed, cleaned and disinfected carefully. Later on, our dentist fills and seals it.
Root Canal Procedures
- Removal of Infected Pulp: Once our root canal dentist has access to the straight line, the inflamed pulp is obliterated. Sometimes, the pulp is integrated, and only specks remain, which is washed out using saline solution. In case of a pus formation beneath the root, removing it will facilitate the drainage of pus and provide you with instant relief.
- Cleaning, Disinfecting and Preparing the Canal: After the pump is removed, the canal is disinfected with saline solution, cleaned and shaped to make room for the filling material.
- Sealing the Canal With Inert Material: It is advisable to keep 3-5 days of the gap before the canal is permanently sealed. When our dentist examines the canal to see if it is ready to be closed, the rubber-based cones are placed into the canals and get filled.
- Restoration of Tooth by Placing the Crown: Once the canal is sealed, the dentist will restore the decayed crown portion with tooth-filling material. Later, the crown is shaped to place the cap, strengthening the tooth.
What Happens During The Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal will extract your infected tooth and give you instant relief. When oral bacteria invade the pulp inside your tooth, you must get a root canal done.
When people fear root canal treatment, they often visualise horrible pictures of the procedure. However, the pain doesn’t typically come from the treatment. Instead, the pain stems from the issues within the teeth that are left untreated for a long time.
How Much Would It Take You To Recover?
The treated tooth can heal within a few days. You may experience some pain once you are awake from the effects of anaesthesia. However, Dr Pratik Modi will prescribe you medications so you will have relief from the pain.

FAQs
What should you know about pulp and RCT?
You need to know a bit of the anatomy of a tooth to understand the pulp. The outer enamel layer encloses a hard layer called dentin and soft tissue pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves. Pulp is housed within the root canals of a tooth. In root canal treatment, the pulp and its nerve supply are removed. It will not affect the tooth’s health as the nerve acts as a sensory function. I.e. sensation of heat or cold.
Is the tooth dead after this treatment?
Yes, after the pulp is removed, the tooth is dead.
What happens when your carious tooth is not treated?
If you delay your root canal treatment, it will worsen the infection. Medications will provide you with temporary relief. You may get a periapical abscess if the cavity remains untreated; it can cause swelling at the base of the tooth, gum and cheek. If this infection becomes severe, then tooth extraction will be the only option remaining with you.
How painful is this treatment?
RCT is meant to relieve the pain of a decayed tooth. However, it is only temporary. You will have mild pain.
Which is better – RCT or Extraction?
It is advisable to save your natural tooth. Extracting the tooth requires a lengthy treatment and can affect the neighbouring teeth and gums.
Can this treatment hurt years later?
In dislodged crown restoration, reinfection will occur with the symptom of pain.
What are the symptoms of failed RCT?
- Sinus tract, Swelling, Abscess, Gum Boil
- Thermal Sensitivity
Can I get RCT done in a day?
There are cases where RCT was completed in a day, but we do not suggest it to our patients. Especially if the infection is severe, it will take 3-4 appointments to complete the treatment.
Can the affected tooth heal itself?
No, an affected tooth can never heal itself. The infection will spread to others to your jaw, resulting in severe pain. It will require root canal treatment and medication. Book your appointment at Bright Dental Care And Implant Center to get the treatment done.
